Kano State Entrepreneurship Summit 2012
THE 1ST KANO STATE ENTREPRENEURSHIP SUMMIT REPORT
“Small and Medium Enterprises (SME) constitutes the bedrock of many economies by providing the impetus for creating employment and value added activities. In Most developing countries, SME operates in the informal sector and developing them will engender economic growth and development. To achieve this objective, conditions for dynamic, indigenous economic activities must be created. The economic competiveness of Kano state rests on its ability to train and fund local entrepreneurs that can nurture home-grown firms and encourage innovation, risk taking and local investment”.

Engr. Dr. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso delivering his speech at the Summit
The Kano state Governor stated that the process of starting a new venture is embodied in the entrepreneurial process, which involves more than just problem solving in a typical management position. An entrepreneur must find, evaluate, and develop an opportunity by overcoming the forces that resist the creation of something new. The process has four distinct phases: (1) identification and evaluation of the opportunity, (2) development of the business plan, (3) determination of the required resources, and (4) management of the resulting enterprise. Although these phases proceed progressively, no one stage is dealt with in isolation or is totally completed before work on other phases occurs.
For example, to successfully identify and evaluate an opportunity (phase 1), an entrepreneur must have in mind the type of business desired (phase 4).
The governor went further to discuss about the challenges of accessing loan facilities for either business start-up or expansion especially in northern part of Nigeria due to lack of Micro finance Institutions .
